Welcome to the Special Interest Group in Indigenous and Colonial Studies
Established in 2024, the Special Interest Group in Indigenous and Colonial Studies (SIGICS) is a network bringing together academics from across Durham University with shared interests in Indigenous and/or colonial studies. Our community spans all career stages – from Postgraduate students, Early Career Researchers to Professors – and reflects the University’s interdisciplinary strength, Equality Diversity and Inclusion and Decolonising ethos, with members drawn from a wide range of departments across the three Faculties.
As an international and intellectually diverse forum, our members conduct research across every continent and engage with a broad range of historical and contemporary contexts, inducing rich and inclusive perspectives on global issues.
We meet regularly throughout the term to discuss key texts, share research and host invited speakers addressing pressing topics from around the world. Through these activities, SIGICS strives to create a meaningful space for discussion and exchange between colleagues and with international research partners, to foster collaborative and non-extractive modes of research.
